You should always leave the house calmly.

Ask your dog to "sit" to have their lead on. If your dog likes to play a game and hide, you will need to have a place that they always wait. This could be the doormat or their bed. Use treats to reinforce this behaviour when you are getting started.

When leaving the house, open the door just enough for you. Say "wait". Look ahead, take a few breaths. Then invite your dog to join you "with me" or "OK" (OK is too exciting for some dogs as a release word).

There are two reasons for this. The first safety reason, is that you are creating a boundary. Your dog should recognise that they never cross the boundary of the front door without stopping and checking for your instruction.

The second reason, is that you are setting your walk up to be calm and for your dog to walk with you.
